Begin with a farm that has been in the family since 1807. Add two proprietors, Dan and Tina Smith, who are totally dedicated to the art of crafting quality table wines. Toss in fabulous one-of-a-kind events, and you have Cypress Bend Vineyards.
The Smiths’ winemaking began in 2005, as they planted 30 acres with five varieties of muscadine grape. These varieties, or cultivars, include the Carlos, Noble, Magnolia, Doreen, and Triumph strains. You can taste the results in 11 different muscadine table wines and one after-dinner wine, plus Chardonnay and Syrah vintages.
The visitor’s center also has a distinct Old World flavor. Generations ago, the farm, named Riverton, was owned by Rev. Daniel White and his wife, Catherine Campbell White. The Smiths are the latest generation of owners. Bordering the farm to the east is the Lumber River with its bald cypress fringe.
One of the great things about Cypress Bend is its unique calendar. Fridays feature live music. Late September marks the Fall Harvest and Grape Stomp, and there's an annual Christmas Open House in December. And in 2015, the Vineyard will celebrate its 10th Anniversary all through the month of June. Cypress Bend Vineyards. A winery for all seasons.
